HypnoBirthing®, a new paradigm in childbirth education, is an easy
to learn method utilizing deep relaxation and focused breathing patterns.
It is as much of a philosophy as a technique. Marie Mongan developed
the HypnoBirthing® program in 1989, putting together ideas that
she had used in the birthing of her own children. The concept is not
new, but rather a rebirth of the concepts that were developed by Grantly
Dick-Read, an English obstetrician. His book, Childbirth Without Fear,
identified the Fear-Tension-Pain cycle as a common accompaniment of
labor.
HypnoBirthing® is based on the belief that when a mother is properly
prepared for birthing—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and
fully relaxed, she can experience the joy of birthing her baby more
easily, often faster, and with less discomfort. With most births requiring
little or no intervention, HypnoBirthing® moms use their skills
to deeply relax, and open to the power, passion and pleasure of birth.
